Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest Deadline: February 1, 2009

To draw attention to the need for being prepared in the event of severe weather, the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness is sponsoring a Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest, open to all students currently enrolled in fourth or fifth grades. The deadline to enter is February 1, 2009.

Posters must illustrate what individuals and families should do to prepare for Michigan severe weather, such as tornadoes, floods, snow storms, severe cold, lightning and thunderstorms, according to contest sponsors.

The first place winner will receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond; second place will be awarded a $100 U.S. Savings Bond; third place will receive a $75 U.S. Savings Bond; and honorable mention will be awarded a $50 U.S. Savings Bond.

Arson Prevention Poster Contest Deadline: March 15, 2009

The Arson Prevention Poster Contest is open to students enrolled in grades 7 through 12, Sponsored by the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee and Michigan Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, the contest is designed to increase the public’s awareness about the devastating effects of arson in Michigan. Posters are judged on their illustration of the negative aspect of arson such as: fire deaths, injuries, job losses, community decay and moral destruction.

Prizes are awarded in each of the two categories (grade 7-9 and grades 10-12). In each category, the first place winner will receive $250; second place will be awarded $150; and third place will receive $100. Each winner’s school will receive a matching cash award.
